Would Academic surgery be one/Academic surgeon?

Interesting question. I think with academic surgery you still have to have a specialty. For example, you could qualify as a cardiothoracic surgeon and then decide to go into academia. So spending half your time still practicing as a cardiothoracic surgeon in theatre/hospital but then also carrying out research. So I do not think that it is a specialty in and of itself.
