This week we will begin by delving into the Pre-Application stage of the journey to becoming a medical student. Each week we will explore each sub-category of our flow chart below by giving you information, directing you to resources and sharing our own personal experiences when we were applying to medical school a very long time ago! We hope this series will enrich your understanding and encourage you to seek the wealth of opportunities available to higher education students.
Widening Participation schemes are available for students from specific regions of the UK* (please follow the link to see the eligibility criteria for each scheme), these are excellent opportunities to immerse yourself into the clinical and academic experiences as potential undergraduate medical students.

King’s offers one of the most extensive WP schemes with over 20 projects available for students from all walks of life with opportunities for funding for Afro-Caribbean student, International students, Mature learners. More information can be found here.

5) St George’s University of London
The WP schemes available from St George’s is limited to specific regions which will be contacted directly by the university and are therefore unavailable for all other students.
*At the time of writing there are 41 medical schools in the UK, 5 of which are in London (KCL, Imperial, UCL, Bart’s, SGUL). **Sutton Summer Schools are available in many intuitions all over the UK, a summary of all universities and their respective eligibility criteria can be found here.
Many of these programmes are highly competitive and over subscribed, so we would recommend preparing an application well in advance to ensure you have met all requirements. Remember organisation is the key to success!
